If you’ve ever flipped through a copy of A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast, you may have become overwhelmed by all of the exciting anchorages and places to explore in Penobscot Bay and beyond. We’re offering a few tried a true favorites as ideas for your next overnight adventure from Camden Harbor. Once you're back on the dock, sip some cocktails at Salt Wharf and get a hot shower and comfortable bed at the Crew Quarters!

1. Calderwood Island

“This 75-acre island northeast of the Fox Island Thorofare boasts open meadows, inviting beaches, and sweeping views of Penobscot Bay.” - Maine Coast Heritage Trust

The Highlights: This place truly feels like a wonderland. Go ashore and hike the winding mowed paths. There are clearings for camping if you feel like staying ashore. The views are phenomenal, and the open hilly fields are magical and cinematic. A highlight of the summer every year.

2. Pulpit Harbor

“Pulpit’s beauty, accessibility, protection, and its size make this ground zero for Penobscot Bay cruising…If you want one of the best sunsets on the Coast of Maine in a setting you will never forget, here’s a contender.” - A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast

The Highlights: After enjoying the sunset over the Camden Hills, take your dinghy to shore at the public landing. Bike or find a ride into town and try an incredible meal at Nebo Lodge.

3. Horseshoe Cove

“Horseshoe Cove is a slot on the eastern side of Cape Rosier, not far from the entrance to Eggemoggin Reach. On the Chart, it looks impossible to enter. But once inside, this beautiful, unspoiled harbor has almost perfect protection” - A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast

The Highlights: mornings are available through Seal Cove Boatyard, so no need to lie awake wondering about your anchor set. The narrow cove winds its way north offering the perfect opportunity to do some dingy exploration before dinner. There is also a reversing falls that attracts fearless kayakers - take part, or enjoy the scene!
